Ai Perceptions In The Design Process: Probable? Possibly.

With the ever increasing subtlety of the influence of Ai, how will human and non human interfaces change the landscape of design efforts. Chances you will never even know. But you can & here’s how.

 In the design process, and with experienced iterators who are able to synthesize complex system thinking, engineering functionality and finance vocabulary ( the art of using time as a cross functional metric for value ) we see that in the findings of The Impact of Design Facilitator Identity on Human Designers where more often than not when the knowledge of the system ( Ai specifically ) takes place it’s the anthropomorphic traits
employed in prior studies (e.g., human-like appearance and verbal communication) cause the knowledge that a system is in place ( Ai or other ) that may not be able to benefit human designers directly. The reality of the system itself can become the impediment.

Where this becomes even more of a powerful factor is in the reality check when an environment of enhanced trust is established with design facilitators ( in person or Ai based ) is where high proficiency participants with unconsciously may rely on that human persona and where less motivation to keep creating better alternative models / design typologies emerges even when the advantage high proficiency participants with “human” facilitator may be offset by their own uncertainty and reliance on a human design facilitator therefore there is not as much significant impact on the average performance of high proficiency human designers vs non-high proficiency individuals. Can it be said that when there is not the interference of the human emotions connected to feedback and motivation that somehow there is a freer more open aspect of the creative process ? Possibly.

We see this even more in corporate, military and government offices where the need for confirmation based approval processes is known and often facilitated from the initial aspects of a particular work flow and where creativity operates within narrow bands of expected output so as to be able to deal with parameters such as, specifically, patent and trademark law which is often the key driver in such efforts.

Intellectual Property ; Innovation Property

When McKinsey knows that Gen AI Adoption Value = IP Value the jump to Innovation Property Value is almost instantaneous as it always has been. But how? Here's how:

In Innovation and Intellectual Property and with extensive data collected into the usability of IP in defending long standing ownership via Chalmers University of Technology researchers we are able to see that often different and co-existing intellectual property regimes means that different sectors of society and their institutions, countries, along with organizations, norms, etc., mean that groups like Sciences and Universities ; Technology and Industry ; Military and Government another ; Culture and Artists even more means, realistically,  too many groups have too many radical notions of what is " protected " and ownership means and which results in, that, in fact, there is no IP protection in the real world with the overarching capabilities of non-country / internet everywhere search engines.

With the push to the fact that often, " the internet " / search engines take the full control of a person's, consumer's and user's experience means that in the end IP protection is the same as the famous New Yorker cartoon that says " on the internet no one knows you are a dog " and where even if someone did, by the time it's determined, your cat, it's too late. This goes even one step further in IEEE's  Novel Method for Visually Mapping Intellectual Property Risks and Uncertainties in Evolving Innovation which is richly researched to go a step deeper into the ways in which this can be accomplished and in particularly within the context of biological systems where constant usage is not the marker for innovation and thus intellectual property protection.

In the end, long standing, well known international companies, products, R&D, new product development and innovation activities are able to easily show innovation protection and via world wide intellectual property protection stemming from their original long lasting efforts. McKinsey goes on to further detail this in that 65 percent of respondents report that their organizations are regularly using gen AI and which itself means long standing world wide trademark, patent, new product development intellectual property protection is extended to these original creators ( and not search engine based only ) via original capabilities. When Generate + Diffuse + Interdepend ≠ Breakthroughs Then What? Innovate!

When the breakdown of systems ( created to formally protect long lasting R&D efforts taking place in lab environments ) and inside well established firms means firm creators must look to other fields to push the boundaries and it's where we can see this no more clearly than in the research of User Innovation in Techniques as well as User Toolkits for Innovation where the incredibly time consuming and also almost impossible real time task of Boundary spanning, Sourcing, interpreting and need-related gathering now causes Ai enabled Sentiment Tracking capabilities to inadvertently negatively drive innovation thus even higher costs for radical NPD being directly effected. But how can this be mitigated ?

When expanding the more intense processes connected to techniques developed within a 10–15 year window we see where the development processes followed in the medical field ( and due to the medical field being so careful in it’s scrutiny for patient safety this being a 10 – 15 year window ) we see first signs of diffusion among other users; and related to product changes with or without manufacturers being a key driver in new product development effort being the key driver of next generation new product development efforts.

In the case of non brand defense relaxed NPD efforts in computer hardware and software ( especially software ) these time-frames are heavily reduced ( for incremental efforts particularly ) and also where said efforts follow the same pattern of effect in terms of the way external forces demanding additional efforts to deal the impact of input from non-internal and non-linear short term NPD maneuvers. Where we see time being effectively utilized in internal radical innovation efforts for the purposes of completing the seemingly impossible, Innovation in Techniques as well as User Toolkits for Innovation also show the alternative confusion that happens when defense based NPD procedures must be put in place to deal with external forces demand attention where not necessary previously.

When Why Not Becomes Here's How, Breakthroughs Happen

Is execution everything ? Is ideation & design everything else ? Is there overlap that can't be ignored but should be mixed appropriately? Yes. All of them. And all at the same time.

With the necessity of linear processing in any number of computational and manufacturing scenarios at some point in the process leading to end use, time and time again we see the need to break barriers so as to be able to step outside of the known and see the soon to become. Where this can be enumerated ever so clearly is in situations where creativity and execution are not only balanced properly across all aspects of new product development efforts but more exactly when forays into new and uncharted territory become directly and observationally significant. What might be unexpected is that as design tasks become excessively challenging and those involved perform at lower levels with respect to originality, The more that is known, the higher the chances for something novel to appear which is counterintuitive to what a " breakthrough " is. However breakthroughs are not necessarily originality based.

Surprisingly in Evaluating The Predictive Validity In Design Product Ideation we must beg the question: just because Openness to experience showed a significant positive correlation with design novelty if Openness to experience added significant incremental validity over and above behaviorally-based assessments of originality on divergent thinking tasks then real innovation has chances where execution might not be the only ultimate end goal. When originality is the heralded bastion of intellectual property creation and the only possible defense in the face of direct copying and immediate manufacturing, if the internet and search engines allow for country agnostic and almost impossible to stop copying, or, even a way to effect said copying, the it's with the worlds most valuable companies and the most cutting edge research initiatives that we see a constant search for the next highest form of usability.

When conscious unexpected discovery is the norm, and when asking why not more often as a way to be a precursor to here's how, this is one specific way that the unthinkable becomes the undeniable and even more so when validated by efforts backed by consistent evidence even in the face of bold outright risk taking.

Computational Thinking Creates ? It Can.

Being creative assumes a substrate that never fails: a good spoon always stirs boiling pots. But what about when there is no spoon ?

When the medium of an artist's studio is a canvas and that canvas turns into a machine with a screen, when we dig a little deeper ( and in Computational Thinking in Science where Peter Dennign weaves together how if biology ultimately becomes an information science, and where computational Simulation always starts as something as simple as estimating how to catch a ball ) we see how our world views are radically changing. We see how in past computational thinking using machines with a screen in specific ways is where now entirely different thought processes and interactions with alternative computing models is allowing us to break free from step wise systems of envisioning, and, all in one shot.

When companies begin to ask ( and after having design thinking being embedded in all aspects of an organization ) how can non-typical computational thinking allows Designers to ignore the mapping of what needs to be physically made into the real machine ( at the physical hardware of whatever computing system XYZ level is in use at the moment  ) and where an almost all of a sudden, radically new model of non-computational thinking emerges. The medium is the message / the message is the system and all ( almost ) cases we see this via data sets. Will this then allows us to be released from systems / the mentality of simulation first and yet this can be that even more doors are beginning to swing wide open in firms and organizations that are growing and evolving with this new capability: raw data ( in so many formats you can't even count them ) first. Design is becoming data. Any data. Raw repositories.

How many designers ( and separate from the engineering mentality ) then become almost intricately connected to the level of abstraction necessary for the computational tools that are used to create &  think ? It is where design itself becomes part of a computational substrate and thus allows a user to directly effect creativity itself via environments or data that can be just loaded into an XYZ system that re-interprets at will. These new inflection points can be where breakthroughs begin to emerge in firms and organization structures and where unexpected efforts begin to grow at exponential rates in ways never expected of before.

Computational thinking then can be looked at not as a simulation job ( and which software engineers - those writing the substrate of the verbal and logical interfaces to the assembler of the microprocessor on which programs run )  but ultimately an exercise where computational systems no longer need to be thought of as linear canvases. We see this in the current capabilities of neuromorphic computing and even stable diffusion Ai systems where designing via completely new ways of thinking emerge quickly and where the output from that effort comes at incredible rates as well. In many cases these also do not requiring humans with their bare ( computer enhanced ) hands to re-invent via a one after another model.

Does this mean that there is an entirely new way of looking at creative computing itself and/or even a possible entire re-assessment of computational thinking / systems thinking as a way of working ? Is it then that within the context of being able to develop the mental skills that facilitate the design of automated process: now today referred to as creating " the algorithm " where we exactly see the possibility to unembed this aspect of the fabric of digging for novel capabilities and functionalities first and which many casually refer to as " innovation " and in some cases ' innovation science ' if such a thing can be said? We can then also see how computational capability and computational thinking can be ( at this moment in time with the machines that we have ) a fully integrated piece of an entire organizations ethos and why it's possible how specific R&D efforts lead the way in determining next generation products yet to be uncovered and where other methods produce radical departures from existing ways seeing and producing all together.

IP Integrity = Intentional Innovation

At the push of a button ( and all systems today allow it ) infinite content (URL) production occurs but how can IP integrity be maintained? Here's how.

When specific design goals, articulated engineering, and laser guided intent are the core focus of a known and maintained collaborative participant R&D based, bench to board room effort, and, when long standing and well established intellectual property protection is enabled so as to be the precursor to any and all accidental efforts to effect said output, this, is when innovation effectiveness is maintained and succeeds.

Implemented by all long standing organizations and efforts are the capabilities of design and engineering output where in verbal forms, low-performing groups that don't use multi-modal IP protection efforts were more likely to conduct R&D activities improperly vs. those that work with specific discernible outputs and with all authorized members connected to said efforts. This means delivering functional effectiveness of new product development takes place properly and rapidly. More we see in a recent and well established industry study which has been widely accepted, it becomes clear that Design for Complex Thinking and Ideathon Using the Transition Design Approach is but just one mechanism to protect decades of years ahead efforts in the substantiation of engineering and design efforts for innovation 1st based organizations.

More specifically we see the see the use of intent based Collaborative pattern analysis ( and sometimes within the context of Ai capabilities ) and execution by existing and long standing intellectual property owners to be the driving factor in the complexity of collaboration with specific focus to bring advanced new product development efforts into the real world. Where the protection allowed via these systems creates an exact and rapid awareness of changing landscapes, unauthorized use of intellectual property, and the necessary next steps to maintain the defensive postures to for the smooth flow of innovation activities, we see the essential foundations for further ground breaking labs based and R&D oriented efforts to continue in the systems necessary for this to take place.
