R&D Realizations Mean Constant Convergence

With the consistent swarm of related and sometimes unrelated efforts necessary to push the boundaries of R&D into viable and usable tools, it's not only firm size, previous R&D experience, belonging to related high-tech services sectors and obtaining public funding which all influence positively and significantly the propensity to cooperate with agents of change to engage and support the capability of making breakthroughs take place.

What this is often at odds with ( and due to the complexity of garnishing funding from country specific national science foundations, government and military funding sources  ) is what R&D portfolios of cooperating firms look like as compared to those that do not cooperate. In " Generation Activities And Innovation Results Of Firms " we see, interestingly it's firms that collaborated with customers and possible end users not yet prepared for massive technological changes which show significantly lower investment in basic research compared vs. firms where investments in applied research and basic research that end up seeing significantly greater success rates due to R&D convergence efforts. Where some firms are also able to effectively use this strategy to pursue objective short-term solutions to market needs, this has been shown to also be to the detriment of expanding their technological knowledge base to other fields ( via basic research ) and without this further expansion synergistic effects of said convergence capability and activities were smaller in firms that did not adopt this mechanism.

With basic research investment reductions and in the case of customer cooperating firms the pattern further reveals the preference of these companies to develop near-market research activities and thus an imbalance for farther reaching efforts in unproven targets but where said successes can be drastically effected by efforts such as consistent merger and acquisition activities. As in the case of apple and their new iVisionPro system such efforts to develop new product lines required an M&A activity of bringing in new companies on average of buying one company every two to three weeks and where many of these firms are effectively purchased out of existence due to the need for person talent and thus intellectual property capture and dominance. It is therefore that such a system and effectively " innovation plus " intellectual property via an R&D mentality that becomes the driving factor for specialized design and engineering solutions and thus a breakthrough innovation model implementation.

Generative Creativity Is Anything But Common Goings-on

Not even one year ago, as the world slept, unaware ( except for a small group, relativistically ) of behind the scenes specialists, a 50yr race was running one of it's final relay sections. R&D Lab efforts unknown to most was about to break through it's shell where previously, the idea that Innovation Doesn't Have A Creativity Problem ; It's Got A Commitment Problem assumed that creativity was once like R&D ( a capability of a specific number of people, with advanced equipment ) was the case, but that with focus, creativity could be accessed by many. That however was all about to change.

iGNITIATE - Generative Creativity Is Anything But Common Goings-on

Little did the world know, we would soon all have a capability in our hands in no short time that would radically up-end the idea of even the thought of ownership and now it seems  Generative AI Has an Intellectual Property Problem where creativity is instantaneous and editable. Gone are the notions of years of graduate school necessary to hone the capability of creativity, but more, the capability to manifest it via highly specific technological tools, etc,. now leading us to a new torture: the legal and ethical challenges posed by generative AI, stemming from content based on existing data scraped from the web for free. Now, with Generative AI the disruption of the design world ( an AI enabling faster and more diverse creation of images, text, and other forms of expression ) is right on top of us all.

Can AI platform uses photos from a licensing service without permission to generate new images, violating the service's rights and expose itself and its users to legal action? Could it even be proven via some yet unknown reverse engineering of Ai created images to show their relevance to existing works, if those works could even be found and proven related? With AI platform and systems generating images resembling a famous painting or a brand logo, while it may infringe on the rights of the artist or the company that owns them could it even be that an artist or creator would even have the capability, let alone raw cash to mount such a lawsuit? Chances are no. There are the ideas of the fair use doctrine, if it is even possible to say that a new work is a criticism, comment, education, or research, but worse that as we all know, once it is on the web, the chances of ever having it taken down, not to mention again, the cost means that Generative Ai is the ever morphing digital noose that has no chance of ever being stopped thanks to in fact search engines. The noose tightens.

Creators, designers, architects, engineers then are faced with transparency and accountability for generative AI platforms but again, could the costs to even mount a case where designers and developers must prove license and compensation for content creators used to train their models, and maintain provenance records of the AI-generated works that include information about the platform, settings, seed data, metadata, and prompt even be possible? Unlikely. Confidential data, trade secrets, personal information and even within the context of millimeter by millimeter  exact copies of works, functionalities and even family photos used on the packaging ( as in the incredibly famous X-IT vs. Kiddy case - an open and shut situation that took 20yrs to come to court with a $116M judgement knocked down to $17M in final payout ) means Ai and Generative art are not only untraceable but even less protectable. The raw power and capability of Ai Generative art and nano-second publishing means an unlimited zeitgeist fire hose of power can be wielded and for which no laws can even begin to contain said capability. The 10,000b gorilla Genii is out of the bottle and now there is nothing that can ever contain it again.

Invention <> Innovation <> Intrapreneurship

With the plethora of design & innovation paradoxes at hand today, the reality is NPD ( new product development ) efforts and the turnaround roadblocks that are persistent in many situations ( to get from 0 to 1 ) are vastly different from the standpoint of usability that typical " successes " define.

Many times and known well often as the:
     • Innovation ( it works on a lab bench ) ;
     • Innovation ( a transition against the tides of "no" it's not acceptable ) into usability; and onto
     • Intrapreneurship ( at enough large enough firms ) so that usability is increased.
model, this also can be in an entrepreneurship model however the balance remains the same.

Seen in The Twelve Paradoxes of Innovation! and The Inescapable Paradox of Managing Creativity and more interestingly The Real Leadership Lessons of Steve Jobs where surprisingly we see the same pattern: the people paradox is not an innovation intractability situation. What then separates the core sections of awareness ( that X is possible through unique invention ) accountability ( through the process of innovation insertion into an already existing or entirely new area of capability ) and then on to acceptance ( large exiting organizational usage via an intrapreneurial stamp of "ok" ) and then ( with large organizations ) incredible adoptable daily usage ?

The separation is in knowing what category of "Innovation" ( a severely overused description ) a situation or activity is part of, and not fooling ourselves where:
     • an effort of invention is taking place
vs.
     • the unknown valley of death where innovation often has to live and breathe
and squarely between
     • the non top and ever pursuing step of intrapreneurship / entrepreneurship, or frankly, selling.

Where we see Job's efforts to mitigate this with: Focus ; Simplify ; Take Responsibility End to End ; When Behind, Leapfrog ; Put Products Before Profits ; Don’t Be a Slave To Focus Groups ; Bend Reality ; Impute ; Push for Perfection ; Tolerate Only “A” Players ; Engage Face-to-Face ; Know Both the Big Picture and the Details ; Combine the Humanities with the Sciences ; Stay Hungry ; Stay Foolish, so many of these are standard cannon in the New Product Development toolbox. More we see how Paradoxes of Innovation bind the idea of immediate results with grander capabilities and certainly vision and thus managing creativity is firmly mixed into this.

Knowing, Noticing and Locking down the core essences of the three phases of Zero to One in the rapidly evolving functional and aesthetic hyperplane that is design, engineering and finance and as all connected to an innovation mindset requires a capability to hold desperate and often contradicting capabilities all at the same time while progressing forward towards an often fuzzy and moving goal, however, in the end, it is ultimately reached.

Innovation IP = Advanced Awareness - Roadblock Resistance

Invention, Innovation, Design Thinking, New Product Development which we are always thinking about when creating future use, are the cornerstone of breakthroughs, but protecting them effectively is rapidly diminishing due to the digital hurdles that now ensure that the fruits of such labor are immediately perishable and/or easily copied and/or outright stolen. Welcome to the world of Generative Design fueled by Ai. But what can innovators do?

iGNITIATE : Innovation IP = Advanced Awareness - Roadblock Resistance

Patents and from the most recent issue of the famed Nature Magazine examine the most effective ways to protect intellectual property (IP) rights, and especially important in the world of lab-based research and development only become valuable when the cost of litigation is baked into every R&D effort by a patent and trademark protection model that incentivizes individuals and companies to invest said efforts upfront. With research and development the idea is that the product is the power, but by granting R&D and Innovation efforts the capability and resources ( read, cash, to protect said efforts ) only then do exclusive rights to inventions, IP, etc., allow firms to recoup efforts and reap the benefits when, in today's design and advanced engineering world, a copy will exist the moment a product is made available for use or purchase, and sometimes even before if it is mentioned in any way in the outside world.

At the heart of many breakthrough innovations, and fueled by deign and design thinking, it is he problem-solving methodology itself that becomes the crucible to potential future human needs and experience driving ROI. Design thinking, a fully multidisciplinary approach, blends creativity, technical engineering capabilities, and user-centricity to create solutions that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and emotionally resonant which although everyone in today's world is well aware of, this also begs the question of how IP is leveraged for the sustainability of said efforts. This approach is especially effective in industries such as fashion, lifestyle ( home, family, etc., ) plus in automotive, and technology, where design drives shaping consumer preferences and ultimately market demand.

With breakthroughs not limited to design departments, design thinking practitioners and aesthetics focused team, along with user experience specialists who created the never ending bridges from expected behavior to future forward efforts, it ends up that design thinking / product capability quickly becomes the driver for advanced engineering thus the key component of new product development - a combination of ( in it's most powerful form ) where advanced R&D efforts meet and exceed performance and safety standards push the boundaries of what is not even known yet to exist. It is here that the artist's mentality begins to play an even larger part in the over all success of such efforts.

Design and innovation efforts speculating about future use is easily created with gathering around a table and giving themselves the creative oxygen and open space to explore the questions of tomorrow, designers with a keen capability to see what is available and where the direction is that a firm is going, means bridges between the present and the future are created. Imagining with hands, building to think, and blending strategic hunches with wild cognitive leaps, lab based efforts based on play and free association with a core sustainability component allow practitioners to slip past the rational mind and invite all the senses and capabilities of firms to drive breakthroughs. This practice of intentional play helps liberate thinking and allows what is initially not possible, to, be possible when intellectual property and functional production economics balanced with legitimate market demand capabilities are taken into consideration.

But what happens when these lab based R&D breakthroughs are realized as functionally usable or when forward deign efforts are pushed out to a broader audience? Can they be protected from being copied or stolen? In today's world, not often without substantial further investment. With the advent of patenting and more importantly patent & trademark litigation, by granting the inventors/creators/firms of effort, exclusive rights to prevent others from making, using, selling, or importing the invention for a limited period of time it's often that without litigation, there is no protection even when inventors and creators ( disclose the efforts to the public, allowing others to learn how things were done ) only increases the chance of further development, thus further patents, and so on and so on.

With the full on overpowering efforts of Ai, and more importantly generative Ai, the capability to protect IP has taken a turn that no litigation could ever keep up with and those owning inventions, patents, trademarks, copyright, etc,. even employees in large firms, start-ups, commercial R&D institutes, and universities ( typically protected in many ways of the ownership of IP developed ) may end up in the future automatically assigning IP to their employer, who, listed as applicant or assignee in legal documents, today, cannot even act quickly enough in a mode where the minute something is created and sold, the next minute it is re-morphed into another format and sold, etc., etc., etc., thus the disputes, previously sources of legal and financial headaches now may not even be executed on, for, as soon as one is dealt with, 100's more issues could be in the pipeline.

Despite the potential challenges, intellectual property protection, generative artificial intelligence, and incredibly expensive IP litigation, even when ultimately successful, requires a blend of forward thinking capability focused on firm sustainability for firms and financially strong groups to push beyond the limits of the onslaught of the Ai Generative Design zeitgeist that we are all facing now and, as pertaining to what Steve Jobs once said, that "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower." yet only in terms of ROI. The most significant discoveries come from the creativity that comes from playing and experimenting and the freedom to imagine and explore, and embrace the wisdom of that labs based R&D efforts deliver to liberate roadblocks for breakthroughs that may change the world when woven carefully with entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial laser focus.

The Third Self: Design Innovations’ Next Muse

In 2001, our idea of The 3rd Self a precursor to the next almost 20yrs of efforts in artificial intelligence systems began. The idea, connected to the first BBS, called a Computerized Bulletin Board System (CBBS) in 1978 was where real people created useful avatars of themselves via something as simple as a username and where, possibly, our Second Self was born. It was that 2nd Self ( all the data we started generating for our user name(s) and that was connected daily and directly to us ) which was a drop in the ocean of the wave that was to come next.

Fast forward to 2023 and now, with widely accessible Ai ( the image for this article came from just asking for an image of ” the third self ” from a Generative Ai image creation system ) not to mention the almost ” sentient ” conversational Ai systems that are at the ready on just about any device imaginable. More we are interacting with said systems through beta version of @Amazon’s Alexa like voice interfaces which are being brought online everyday. Systems like @Microsoft’s Bing and @Google’s Bard not to mention @Facebook Meta’s BlenderBot are only the begging of western nation capabilities and full system functionalities  that chat openly with humans and about any topic imaginable ( in what seems like the Turing Test being beaten ) but which can also, in some cases, fully augment the design and engineering capabilities that we all struggle with every day – the infinitely complex time consuming tasks that we spend our days on. With such systems means the world has radically changed. Almost overnight. Almost.

We have jumped ( with the advent of readily accessible and tremendously powerful Ai systems available and at NO costs to users at this point ) from a clunky 8088 PC experience to a Macintosh world, a ” smart ” cell phone to the iPhone 1, seemingly, in the blink of an eye. A 70yr blink to be safe to say. With additional and almost incomprehensible capabilities of such Ai systems that can ” write a @WhatsApp message to my sister about options for vegetarian dishes made with pumpkin ” to ” create me an dynamic trading day trading algorithm based on the following criteria…. ” to ” imagine a series of high gloss black chairs based on the shape of a @Steinway&Sons Grand Piano ” coming online every second, it seems we are most likely days away from each and every person having their own, self aware ( and created from our own individual data: eg. your tweet from yesterday, a Facebook post from last week, An Instagram photo from last month, etc., ) being right at your fingertip. It’s been in the labs for years. Now it’s about to be in your pocket. It will be in your wireless earbuds. It will soon be in your fully integrated AR/VR headsets and then embedded into your in-eye Ar/Vr contact lenses not even 20yrs away: they are fully working and in clinical human trials now as we speak.

Shortly, you will be able to have yourself speak directly to you if you wish, or with all your knowledge and data & experiences, have Leonardo Da Vinci speak to you in his voice. Or do the same, with all his experiences and yours combined. Or just speak to you with his alone. As our Third Selves have always been available to us, we may just never have been able to talk directly to it. We may have never been fully aware of it yet. But we will be. We will be.

Apple’s new and very wearable Ar/Vr headsets are due out this year, 2023, 16 years after iPhone 1 was launched on Jan 2007 and the typical, radical, 20yr technological shift is right on track. And, with this new technology, new interfaces will be needed. The next wave of end user consumer electronics and technologies are about to be a fully integrated digital extension of ourselves who we talk to, work with, have fun with and which will, most likely, outlive us for others to also interact with when we are gone. Our inaugural Third Self, our own, personal 3rd selves, for each and every one of us to interact with is just a monthly subscription model away, and we, as curious humans, won’t be able to resist. A fully new frontier is about pop into existence  where we will boldly go where ( humanity ) has not gone before.

Did this radical and truly disruptive design ( and as tautological overkill, this disruptive innovation ) 3rd Self just come our of no where? From a eureka moment? Only in it’s idea and naming, but certainly with more than 70yrs of giant’s shoulders to stand on and where in 2015, and with substantial funding, @OpenAi was founded in San Francisco by 6 lead investors collectively to the tune of $1B in capital which has gotten OpenAi to where it is in 2023 – giving us the tools necessary to launch our 3rd Self for each of us. The capabilities necessary to bring our Third Self into being, a 3rd persona ( for a user and by a user with each of our past interactions intact and for any and all electronic devices that we have touched ) means a completely new way of thinking, acting, working, and living. Are we ready for such design power at all our fingertips ? Can we even begin to ” … Think About Our Different Styles of Thinking ? ” and how our 3rd Selves will be created by and for us ? In the above article ( https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/01/16/how-should-we-think-about-our-different-styles-of-thinking ) by @joshuarothman asks all the right questions: do we even know what to do with such power ? And, what does this mean for how our new selves, our Third Selves, who interface directly with us daily will help us design and build the products and services that come from our extra minds that we are each just about ready to bring online at the push of a button ?

With such a radical shift having seismically hit us all ( there isn’t hardly anyone who hasn’t heard of GTP3 and OpenAi by now ) how does such a groundbreaking ( and lengthy 2015-2023 or 8yr journey and again, based on at least 8 previous years before 2015 of rapid technological efforts: government backed education and R&D commercialization efforts ) emerge when more recently the notion that a muse cannot just misalign multiple methods randomly? A muse does not just show up. Not like the muse ( the technology ) of the 3rd Self. This begs us to understand that innovation is not just about seeing the farthest or even the most and/or as rapidly as possible ( that is the department of wild winds ) rather it’s the way the most possibilities are connected in a specifically cohesive alternative way for useful outcomes to coalesce and emerge. For code to be written for specific problem solving to take place. For design typologies to emerge. For architectural systems to come in to being and thus products to be produced from all of the above.

We are at a similar cross roads like the 1st days of the 1st web browser, Mosaic, being launched publicly in Jan 1993 with today’s 1st glimpses of the coming AGI ( Artificial General Intelligence ) breakthrough innovations happening right before our eyes.

Our 3rd Selves are right around the corner.
Our Third Self is just about to be born
